Vitamin B12

A few years ago, I found out my Vitamin B12 levels were low after I had a bad episode on the PATH train traveling into NYC one day. I fainted and essentially, blacked out (which believe it or not, is not a rare occurrence for daily commuters on the train). This wasn’t the first time I felt lightheaded & over-heated when commuting to work via an NJ Transit Train or via the PATH Train (also, remember that this was before COVID-19 so no concern over that). I remember how kind my fellow riders were - I was given a seat immediately, fanned, and offered water and food. I felt better when I got off the train and continued my day normally. Upon telling my husband, he insisted I get my blood levels checked. A week or so later, I did, and the doctor saw that I was deficient in B12. I took supplements for a few months and my levels went back to normal. I still occasionally take supplements, whenever I feel weak or faint.

This is why we wanted to STRESS the importance of Vitamin B12, as it is not talked about often.

Did you know that you need 2.4 mcg of vitamin b12 daily to function properly and be “healthy”?

This is equivalent to 3 oz of beef or salmon. However, did you know that NUTRITIONAL YEAST is a wonderful source as well? Nutritional yeast contains high levels of Vitamin B12 per tbsp! Unfortunately, you can’t find vitamin b12 in veggies or fruits so you’ll have to find it either in supplements or fortified food, if you’re a vegan.

Why is it so important? It plays an important role in metabolism and without it, we can get build up of harmful side products which can cause anemia and other complications.

Additionally, studies have shown that for patients experiencing Alzheimer’s, vitamin b12 supplements can help slow down the progression of the disease. That’s pretty incredible!!
